- This Read Me document provides information about your LaserWriter IIf and IIg
- that is not covered in the owner’s guide. You may want to print this Read Me
- document and keep it for future reference.
-
- IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE USING PHOTOGRADE WITHIN A PROGRAM
-
- Some application programs override the PhotoGrade feature. If you have trouble
- using PhotoGrade within a program, try one of these possible solutions:
-
- • Choose the “Use Printer Defaults” option if the program has one.
- • If the program allows you to control the line screen settings used when
- printing a document, change the settings to 106 lines and 45 degrees.
-
- IF YOU SEE MESSAGES ABOUT NEEDING MORE MEMORY
-
- If you have a LaserWriter IIf and want to print using the PhotoGrade feature,
- Apple recommends upgrading to 8 MB.
-
- Although the PhotoGrade feature will work with only 5 MB of RAM, there may be
- times (when printing complex pages with multiple fonts and/or complex graphics)
- when the printer does not have enough memory to print the page. In such cases,
- you will see a “VMerror” or “limitcheck” PostScript error in the print status
- dialog box of your Macintosh or (if background printing is turned on) in the
- Print Monitor status window. These error messages simply mean that you need
- more memory to print the job. (The following section describes some possible
- solutions.)
-
- WAYS TO USE LESS MEMORY
-
- There are several things you can do to reduce the memory requirements of your
- document:
-
- • Reduce the number of fonts used in your document.
- • Use the fonts built into the printer rather than downloaded fonts. (You can
- use the LaserWriter Utility to find out which fonts are built into the
- printer.)
- • Turn on Unlimited Downloadable Fonts in the Options dialog box (chosen from
- the Page Setup dialog box).
- • Turn off the Text Smoothing and Graphic Smoothing options in the Page Setup
- dialog box.
-
- IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE CONNECTING NON-APPLE HARD DISKS
-
- If you have connected a non-Apple hard disk to your LaserWriter IIf or IIg, and
- the printer does not recognize the hard disk (that is, the hard disk is not
- mentioned on the startup page when you turn on the printer), follow these
- steps:
-
- 1) Turn off the printer and all hard disks connected to it.
- 2) Turn on all the hard disks and wait at least 10 seconds for them to “spin
- up” to full speed.
- 3) Turn on the printer and let it initialize itself and print a startup page.
- (The startup page will probably still not indicate any non-Apple hard disks
- attached.)
- 4) Turn the printer off and then on again, and let it initialize itself again.
- (This time, the startup page should indicate that all the non-Apple hard
- disks are attached.)
-
- If these steps still do not cause the printer to recognize a non-Apple hard
- disk, then the disk needs to be initialized. Use the LaserWriter Utility to
- identify and initialize any non-Apple hard disks that the printer does not
- recognize.
-
- IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE PRINTING WITH ZAPF DINGBATS
-
- Zapf Dingbats and other fonts are provided on the LaserWriter II Fonts disk
- that comes with your printer. These fonts are copied onto your hard disk
- automatically as part of the installation process. Each time you need one of
- these fonts, it is downloaded to your printer.
-
- Some application programs have trouble printing high-quality Zapf Dingbats
- characters this way. If you have this problem, use the LaserWriter Utility to
- download the font to your printer’s RAM or to a hard disk attached to your
- printer.
-
- In addition, to use the Zapf Dingbats font, one of the following must be true:
-
- • Your Macintosh system version must support TrueType. (TrueType works with
- System 7.0 and later versions of System 7, and with System 6.0.7 using the
- TrueType extension.)
-
- OR
-
- • You must have the Zapf Dingbats outline font file (from LaserWriter Fonts
- Disk 1) in your System Folder. (Copy the file directly into the System
- Folder. The file must not be hidden inside any folders within the System
- Folder.)
-
- INFORMATION ABOUT SCSI ID NUMBERS AND COMMUNICATIONS SETTINGS
-
- The SCSI identification number assigned to all LaserWriter IIf and IIg printers
- is 6. Make sure that no hard disk attached to the printer has been assigned
- this SCSI ID number. (Each SCSI device must have a unique ID number.)
-
- The numbers in the Configure Communications dialog box (chosen from the
- Utilities menu) represent communications settings, not SCSI ID numbers.
-
- For more information about SCSI ID numbers and about communications settings
- available for the LaserWriter IIf and IIg, see your owner’s guide.
-
- IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WHEN USING THE LASERWRITER UTILITY
-
- If you use the LaserWriter Utility with any printer other than a LaserWriter
- IIf or IIg, you may find that the Get Page Count feature reports incorrect
- numbers. To get an accurate page count, check the startup page that prints
- whenever you turn the printer on (unless you have turned the startup page
- feature off). See your owner’s guide for instructions on turning the startup
- page feature on and off.
-
- If you use the LaserWriter Utility when a screen saver program or Balloon Help
- is activated, your Macintosh may have problems redrawing the screen. The screen
- will be redrawn once the LaserWriter Utility has completed its task.
